Day 1 Off, Off, and Away!

July 26th Not my picture, but the sunset in my rearview mirror looked a lot like that this evening.
From Omaha to just East of Louisville, KY. today. It was a beautiful day for a drive! There was really only one not  so pleasant hour, and that was coming through St. Louis.
Remember how I said I don't care for people in lines?  Well, put those people in cars, give them electronic devices to distract them, and those lines become my worst nightmare! It was my own fault for  thinking that 3 p.m. on a Friday would find the rush hour not yet in full swing...how wrong I was! After creeping along for nearly a half hour marveling at how many people I saw texting, accelerating  unnecessarily fast just to slam on their brakes when the traffic speed slowed again in a half of a mile, and don't even get me started on the lack of turn signals! As I am white knuckling my way down the safest looking lane, wondering if it really is just me being overly cautious in thinking that people take too many stupid chances in traffic like that, it happened. The traffic sped up briefly making those fine folks who are in a hurry lead foot it, and sure enough the little Ford SUV right beside me got slammed into when the traffic suddenly stopped! The SUV behind him-who had a phone in his hand-slammed on the brakes and skidded a half a car length, but still hit  hard enough to send the Ford into the car in front of her. They were all trying to pull off to the side as the traffic started moving again, so it seemed like they were most likely okay. Shaken up I'm sure, I know I was! Judas!!! Slow down people, and put the phones down!
Other than that harrowing experience, the rest of the day was just fine. A little over ten hours tomorrow and I will reach my first destination, my childhood friend's home in Suffolk, VA.  Yay! It is such a gift to have a friend who has lived through so many life stages with you. She and I met in Kindergarten. The older I get the more I realize how special those kinds of friendships are.
But, it has been a long day, so I am ending this entry with a few reflections to wrap up my thoughts:
*Cars should have automatic turn signals. The steering wheel turns and they automatically come on. Why not? We have automatic everything else on our cars now, it seems foolish to let that feature be up to the driver. Especially when so many don't bother to use them. Should I hurry and patent that, or is it already being used and I just haven't seen it? If it is, it should be on EVERY car made, just like seatbelts were. Also, if it hasn't been invented yet I now have proof I thought of it, so pay up car makers! Lol
*The flooding that is still happening, and the destruction from it that I saw coming down I29 was every bit as bad as I have been hearing. My heart goes out to those property owners. I cannot even imagine the stress they are under.
*People do not become better drivers at night. Especially in Kentucky. Sorry Kentucky. Such a beautiful state during the day time, but my oh my...just getting through the gas station parking lot next to my hotel felt a lot like level 3 of Mario Brothers. You just keep dodging the incoming obstacles and praying not to get hit by them! Lol
*I love, love, love that soft southern accent these northern sections of our southern states have. I have always been a sucker for that melodic lilt it gives their words. I swear everything just sounds nicer to me when you say it with that soft southern accent!
*One benefit to flying solo is that when you end up with a double room, ALL the pillows are yours!! Mine! Mine! Mine! Just me and my posse of pillows. Lol. Gnite world.
